Class 1 assistant at Little Yarra Steiner School for 2010

We are seeking individuals who have completed training in Steiner Education and are currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Education with the intention of becoming a teacher.  Our intention is for these positions to be a supplement to formal training allowing sustained observation and participation in a classroom.  Ideally, this will be a two year appointment (the assistant staying with the class for classes 1 and 2)

 These assistants will work closely with the class teachers for the first part of the day in many aspects of the work.  To assist them in their further education they will be invited to join the faculty meetings and avail themselves of resources and professional learning opportunities run in house etc.

The position involves working with students from year 2 through to year 12 and is currently approximately 1 day with the possibility of increasing over time.

 

We are looking an energetic and creative person with experience in as many of the following areas as possible:

 

·        Preparing students for VCE solo performance

·         Working with young children in choirs and class groups combining movement and voice work

·         Some understanding/interest in Steiner education

Class Teacher Job Description

The School:

 Little Yarra Steiner School is a single streamed comprehensive k -12 school that works out of the Waldorf/Steiner school impulse. It is a member of  the Independent Schools Association of Victoria.  The School itself is located outside Yarra Junction in Victoria.

 Role of the class teacher

 The Class Teacher’s role is to undertake responsibility for a class for the duration of their time in classes 1 to 8. The Class Teacher provides a focus for the class and continuity over many years of development. He or she aims to be a figure of moral authority based on commitment, care for the children and a willingness to develop a close professional relationship with the parents.

 Class Teacher’s responsibilities:

 The class teacher’s primary responsibility is to bring in an artistic way the curriculum as outlined by the school.  In doing this the Class Teacher is expected to work in cooperation with their fellow teachers, and the school’s policies and procedures.  Further responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

 ·             To work out of an Anthroposophical understanding of child development

·             To work with and follow the directives given by the College of Teachers

·             To recognise and respect the individuality of each child in the class – both their gifts and their challenges

·             To teach out of a love for the children

·             To widely research the subjects and epochs brought to the children

·             To create and maintain a sound learning environment in the classroom

·             To be prepared for all lessons

·             To use a variety of strategies to engage all the children in class in the lessons taught

·             To develop and use a variety of strategies for behaviour management in the classroom

·             To keep on-going assessment records of each child in the class

·             To communicate with and support the specialist Teachers of your class

Professional Responsibilities

 §               To be at school for their committed hours of employment, and be punctual for lessons, duties, and meetings.

 §               If the teacher is not in charge of the class at any time during the day he/she may leave the campus but should inform the office beforehand.

 §               Interviews, extra meetings, parent-teacher evenings, excursions and performances may all require the teacher to be at school outside the normal day.

 §               All staff members are required to attend the January conference each year and curriculum days as scheduled throughout the year.

 §               Teachers will perform playground duties or other duties as part of the duty-of-care responsibilities.

 §               Each teacher will prepare a program of the lessons they intend to teach at the beginning of each year, outlining briefly the Main Lessons and Practice Lessons for the year.

 §               Records of student attendance, parent-teacher interviews, lesson plans, incidents and results of any tests done by the children are to be kept in the appropriate file in the office.

 §               Student reports should be completed at least twice a year that comply with federal regulations for reporting and with attendance noted, as well as a comment on the development and progress of the child. These reports and copies of any specialist reports or other official information relating to the child should be kept on his/her file located in the office.

 §               The curriculum approved by the College of Teachers is to be followed.  Any deviations from this curriculum should only be undertaken with the consent of the College of Teachers.

 §               Teachers are expected to make themselves available for at least one interview with the parents of every child they teach each year.

 §               Where a parent asks for a meeting with a teacher, the teacher is required to make him/herself available at a mutually convenient time, however the teacher is welcome to seek support with these meetings from the College of Teachers or the Education Administrator if he/she feels it is necessary.  Where appropriate, the teacher may need to follow the School’s grievance procedures.

 §               Class meetings will be held each year, during terms 1, 3, and 4.

 §               Regular messages in the school newsletter or class letters to inform parents of coming events, activities, curriculum, excursions etc should be sent to parents. 

 §               Teachers are required to work with specialist teachers in program development and class management strategies for the class. 

 §               Within reasonable limits and depending upon the circumstances, teachers may be asked to do relief teaching where specialists or other teachers are absent. (See relief teaching procedures.)

 §               Teachers may be asked to sit on interview committees, take part in curriculum writing, undertake specified professional development, represent the school officially and other administrative duties as required by the College.

 §               College members will have extra duties as required.

 §               Teachers are expected to have a positive and professional working relationship with their colleagues.

 §         Registration requirements demand that teachers regularly take part in professional development.  The scope and frequency of activities will be negotiated with Faculty and College.

 §         When taking leave ensure that, whenever possible, the appointed individual is informed in advance of your absence.

 §         To attend weekly staff and faculty meetings

 §         To follow the procedures and policies of the school

 §         To ask for assistance when needed

 §         Participate in regular appraisals/reviews of their teaching – at the end of their first year and every two years after that.

 Selection Criteria:

 Includes:

  • Class Teachers must be registered with the Victorian Institute of Teachers, or be able to prove that an application to the VIT would be successful. 
  • Training in Steiner Education or Background in Steiner/Waldorf education, or a willingness to undertake training.
  • Appropriate Tertiary Qualifications
  • Demonstrable understanding of relevant policy and or legislation pertaining to education in Victoria i.e. Welfare, Child protection, Bullying, anti discrimination, etc.

Upper School Teacher Job Description

The School:
